Smoothing

Smoothing is an approximation function that irons out noise in your data so the patterns stand out.

Why it matters: It reduces accuracy of the information but reduces size (and noise) and thus speeds up analysis and interpretation.

  • For example, moving average function reduces noise in Time-Series data.
  • Smoothing in image processing is used to reduce the accuracy of images and with it compress the size of the image.
